From Glasgow:

Approximately two hours drive (about 90 miles) north from Glasgow on the main A82 trunk road.

  • Follow the M8, cross the Erskine Bridge and then join the A82 out to Dumbarton and Loch Lomond
  •  Turn left at Crianlarich and follow the A82 over Rannoch Moor and all the way through the glen of Glencoe and village of Glencoe
  • Passing the village of Ballachulish, stay on the A82 Fort William road (not the Oban road) over the Ballachulish Bridge to get to North Ballachulish
  • Straight after the bridge pass the right turn for the Loch Leven Hotel; pass the right turn for Kinlochleven ; a few hundred metres there is a right hand turn sign for “Old Town” (cul-de-sac), a single track road which you take** 
  • Follow this single track road all the way to the end at a  turning area;   turn left here and then sharp right for Rowan Brae (house name sign) up the incline driveway
  • ** (if you miss the right hand turn into the single track road, carry on for couple hundred metres to the Gleaner Petrol station and turn around there)

From Edinburgh:

Typical journey time 2.5 hours from Edinburgh and 1.5 hours from junction 10 .

  • Take the M9 to Stirling and leave at junction 10, signposted Callendar and A84
  • The A84 continues as the A82 at Crianlarach
  • Continue on the A82 through Rannoch Moor and all the way through the glen of Glencoe, then follow the directions as above to get to North Ballachulish and Rowan Brae

From the north

  • Head for Fort William, passing through it and continue on the A82 south for approx 12 miles /  20 minutes driving  south
  • Passing through various villages, Loch Linnhe is often visible on your right
  •  After passing through  Onich and then North Ballachulish, reaching  a Gleaner petrol station on your right the road bends to the right, with a church on your left
  • Then a couple of hundred meters to a road sign pointing to a left turn for “Old Town”, (cul-de-sac), a single track road which you take *
  • Follow this single track road all the way to the end at a turning area; turn left here and then sharp right for Rowan Brae (house name sign) up the incline driveway
    * (if you miss the left hand turn into the single track road, carry on to the left hand turn for Kinlochleven B863,  turn around there.   If you reach the Bridge you have gone too far!)

 

From Oban / ferry terminal (32 miles / 45 minutes)

  • Follow road signs for A828 Fort William (going north)
  • Crossing the Connel Bridge, continuing on the A828 through various villages en route (e.g. Benderloch, Barcaldine, Appin, Duror, Kentallen)
  • Road then takes you under the Ballachulish Bridge to a roundabout – turn right onto the A82 signposted for Fort William
  • Crossing the bridge, follow directions as per ‘Glasgow’ above, to reach Rowan Brae
